What is Spinal Decompression?
Are you suffering with back or neck pain because of a herniated disc, sciatica, a degenerative disc, spinal stenosis or arthritis? Do you experience back, leg, neck, arm or shoulder pain on a regular basis?
The pain that we are primarily concerned with is the pain that disrupts your daily life; the pain that interferes with getting a comfortable night’s sleep, showering, bending over to pick something up, and sitting at your desk, enjoying a round of golf or playing with your children. In other words, the back pain that you experience all day, everyday. It’s a constant ache that you can’t escape.
If you have been experiencing daily burning, tingling or stabbing pain more days than you care to recall, please continue reading- Spinal decompression Therapy may be for you.
On your visit to our Lisburn Clinic, your Chiropractor will assess your presenting complaint and judge whether you need some decompression therapy. Mostly the treatment protocol is used for patients who suffer from herniated discs, sciatica, a degenerative disc, Nerve entrapment syndromes, spinal stenosis or arthritis.
You will begin by lying face down and will be secured to the table by a comfortable harness system. The Harness helps to stabilize both your hips and pelvis for decompression.
The Decompression advanced computer controls ,automatically, adjusts the proper angle of distraction (the amount of tension/traction that is gently applied), allowing specific discs that are causing your pain to be targeted for correction.
As you relax, a decompressive effect is then created on your back. This helps herniated material (often referred to as a Slipped disc) return to its normal position and stops the pain that you may be experiencing. Patients often describe the treatment as a gentle, intermittent pulling of their back. The therapy can be so relaxing that many of our patients fall asleep during their treatment.
Treatments?
Depending on their individual presenting complaint patients will undergo a series of treatments over a period of 4-6 weeks. Each visit may last 10-20 minutes. It is important to note that many patients get substantial, immediate relief after just a few treatment sessions and some report significant relief after just one treatment.
In order to allow adequate healing of the damaged tissues, a guided care plan should be followed even when the pain has completely eased. The process helps to heal the disc lesion instead of covering up the symptoms. Current research studies report that patients remain pain-free long after they finish the program. Chiropractic is not about getting a quick fix. Chiropractors at the Lisburn and Bangor Chiropractic Clinics take time to properly assess and diagnose the type of lesion that may be the cause of the complaint/ pain. Before treating you a thorough history, examination, surface EMG scan and, when necessary, X-Rays are taken to understand your problem. We then will bring you back to our clinic for a report of findings, during which we will highlight why you are experiencing the discomfort/pain that brought you in, the length and even the cost of care. A treatment schedule will also be prescribed and your Chiropractor will explain which treatment modality will be used to improve your condition.
Along the way ,a series of exercises and some dietary/lifestyle advice will be prescribed to facilitate your recovery and guide you towards a path of better health and wellbeing. If you require further information please feel free to contact us.
