Pelvic Girdle/ SI joint pain

Approximately 25% of our patients come to us with a chief complaint of lower-back/pelvic pain . This pain or discomfort can be described as either deep dull ache, occasionally sharp or burning and at times the pain may be continuous and refer to the back of the thigh and all the way to the foot. It is not uncommon for patients to complain also of intermittent pins and needles or numbness in their limbs. The fact is that pain has various characteristics and may indicate a number of conditions. Generally patients refer to these ailments as Pelvic pain, SI pain. Mostly, this pain can be brought on by old injuries, repetitive strains, poor posture, motor vehicle accidents or just everyday living. Your Chiropractor is best equipped at understanding the nature of your presenting complaint and whether you may require something other than Chiropractic. If so, a referral to another Health care provider will be the case.

In several studies conducted in the UK, Australia and North America to establish the efficacy of spinal manipulation as a treatment for lower back pain researchers reported that "the trend for spinal manipulation to produce better results than any other form of treatment to which it was compared was consistent and strong". Patients have consistently reported to have had longer lasting results, fewer relapses and recovered much faster at a more cost effective rate.

Many pregnant women attend chiropractic Clinics when expecting a baby for musculoskeletal pain Syndromes associated with pregnancy .

It is well documented that 20% of women will suffer from pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy. Vieeming et al. Euro Spine Journal, 2008 jun ,17(6)794-829. Other studies by Mens et al, J Obstet Gyneco 2009 Mar,64(3) 200-8 found that instability is common in those women with pelvic girdle pain: 32-36% more motion in the 3 pelvic joints that in healthy controls.

Chiropractors aim to correct associated sacroiliac dysfunction by using various adjusting techniques including spinal manipulation, direct corrective muscular techniques. They generally will advise their patients on health, posture, nutrition and rehabilitative exercises which help rebalance the spine.

Chiropractors are required by the General Chiropractic Council, the regulating body for chiropractic in the UK, to take a thorough history and carry out a physical examination of every patient, in order to form an appropriate diagnosis and to determine if the patient would benefit from chiropractic care. If the chiropractor identifies a patient who cannot be helped by chiropractic care, normal practice would be to refer the patient to the most appropriate healthcare practitioner for further consultation.
